Wuhan University Team won the First Prize in 2017 International Criminal Court Trail Competition (English)

Co-hosted by the International Criminal Court and China University of Political Science and Law, the 4th International Criminal Court Trail Competition (ICC) was held in China University of Political and Science Changping Campus from March 11th to 12th. 23 university teams, including those from Peking University, Tsinghua university, Renmin university of China, Wuhan university and Jilin university, qualified for the second round after preliminary selection and participated in the final for 2-days of competition,

 

Wuhan University Team led its opponents in three consecutive matches and won the First Prize of Group with its excellent oral performance and meticulous memorial in the early stage.

 

The International Criminal Court of Trail Competition is innovated by the International Criminal Court and co-operates with legal organizations or colleges all over the world. It is held in six official languages of the Court and of great importance and profound influence in the field of international law. The Law School and the Institute of International Law of Wuhan University have actively supported students to participate in this competition since 2014 in order to train students' ability of logical thinking, English Expression and comprehensive interpretation of important issues in the international judicial organs. Under the guidance of Professor FENG Jiehan of Law School, Wuhan University Team has won the First Prize of Group for 3 times.

 

Wuhan University Team of this year was assembled in September 2016. Professor FENG Jiehan from the Institute of International Law is the chief coach. PhD candidate QIU Huixin is the executive coach. Postgraduates CHEN Yating, DONG Fangyun, YING Yaohui and undergraduates WANG Juejie, YI Qing as the team members participated in the competition. Since the registration in November, 2016, the Institute of International Law has provided a lot of preparation and training. With the concern and support of the leadership the Law School and mentors of the Institute of International Law, especially the guidance of team advisor Professor FENG Jiehan, all team members fully devoted into the preparation of the competition. They learned the knowledge of international criminal law with plan, researched large amounts of papers and cases of the international criminal law field, sort out the controversial points, work hard on the professional English expression, have multiple strict trainings and intense yet in-depth discussions. In particular, in order to better prepare the writing of the memorials, the participants did not go home on time until the Campus was closed, and eventually wrote more than 30000 words. Before the beginning of this semester, all the members returned to school two weeks in advance to prepare for the oral stage. Under the guidance of the coaches, the team members revised their speeches for several times and practiced repeatedly, finally get into the best state for oral competition.

 

In accordance with the rules, the oral stage held in 11th and 12th March adopted the round-robin. The participaiting teams shall prepare for the roles of prosecutors, defendant lawyer and victim representative respectively. In three rounds of matches, our team competed against six university teams, including the University of International Business and Economics, China University of Political Science and Law and Capital University of Economics and Business. In confrontation with the opponent, our team members stayed calm and performed well, fully demonstrated their solid foundation of international law, outstanding ability of in-game adjustments and English Expression, received positive comments of many judges, including former judge of ICTY LIU Daqun.

 

Last but not least, the reasons why Wuhan University Team can once again won the honor of the Law School are the great support of the leadership of Law School and careful guidance provided by mentors of Institute of International Law, especially Professor FENG Jiehan the team advisor. We hope more and more students would be interested in international criminal law and take active part in the next ICC competition to improve themselves and to win honor for our university.
