Co-hosted by United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, the East Asia Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Law School of City University of Hong Kong, the 15th Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis East) was held in Hong Kong from March 12 to 19. The competition attracted a total of 126 top teams from prestigious law schools around the world, including Harvard University, Yale university, University of Freiburg and National University of Singapore. Top universities of Chinese mainland for example Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and so on also attended this competition.
During the Vis East Moot of this year, associate professors LIANG Wenwen and QIAO Xiongbing were advising the Wuhan University team. Postgraduates of Law School ZHANG Yao, CHEN Taiming, undergraduates LI Xiangruchen, CHEN Qiuming, alumna CHEN Yingyun were the coaches. The team members include postgraduates ZHUANG Xiaojun and XIAO Weichu, undergaduates PAN Shuran, ZENG Yinli, YU Liyuan and XIAO Yulong. XIAO Yulong and XIAO Weichu as the Oralists were competing with Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of Amsterdan and Bucerius Law School in the round-robin.
After four days of competing, the Oralist XIAO Weichu stood out among 243 debaters from all over the world with the 26th place, nominated with the Best Oralist. She was the only one from Chinese mainland universities who won this award in this competition. And this is also the first time in the history of our school team that we have one this award. Wuhan University Team again got the best result among Chinese mainland competing universities in the oral round of Vis East Moot this year. The Team had 5 more places to get for advancing from the round-robin and finally was the 37th place.
The Team prepared immediately for leaving for Vienne to attend the 25th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot) and competing with teams from over 300 universities around the world. During the round-robin, Wuhan University Team sent undergraduates PAN Shuran and YU Liyuan as well as the postgraduate ZHUANG Xiaojun to match against University of Bonn, University of Bremen, Pennsylvania State University and the winner of Vis Moot of this year, Indian Law Society's Law College, Pune. Even though we did not make it to the elimination round, our team members still worked hard and never gave up, kept on sharpening the factual and legal views and resources. We also took the opportunities provided by this competition in Vienne, attended in other academic forums held in the same period and learned a lot.
