On October 29th, the academic conference "International Communication of China's International Law Theory" was successfully held at Wuhan University School of Law. The conference was organized by Wuhan University Institute of International Law (hereinafter referred to as the "International Law Institute") and the Dutch Brill Publishing House. The purpose of this conference is to stimulate academic enthusiasm and expand international horizons, focusing on Brill Publishing House and its magazines, further promoting the dissemination of academic ideas of international law in China in the form of books and magazines.
At 9 o'clock on the morning of the 29th, Professor Nie Jianqiang, Deputy Director of the International Law Institute, presided over the opening ceremony. He first gave a brief introduction of the International Law Institute, the Brill Publishing House and the foreign experts who attended the meeting. Professor Xiao Yongping, Director of the International Law Institute, delivered an opening speech. He expressed his warm welcome to the scholars at home and abroad. He hoped that this meeting would enable Chinese scholars to increase their understanding of foreign publishers by strengthening communications with Brill Publishing House, further promoting China's international law thinking to the world stage.
Next, Mr. Hans van der Meij, senior editor of Brill Publishing House, introduced the agency. Founded in 1683 in Leiden, the Netherlands, Brill Publishing House has a history of more than 300 years. It currently disseminates academic results globally through paper and online resources. Brill Nijhoff is a well-known legal publication brand. Brill Publishing House has also cooperated closely with China. It has cooperated with universities and publishing houses in China to publish more than 100 books and 15 journals. It also hopes to convert the academic achievements of Chinese scholars into English language and promote it to the global market. . Later, Ms. Liesbeth Kanis, Asia Business Director, continued to introduce the process of publishing in cooperation with Brill Publishing House.
There were three lectures on the afternoon of the 29th. First, Professor David Freestone, as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, gave a systematic introduction of his journal and presented new academic developments in related fields in recent years, such as consultations under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea about measures that are binding under international law which can protect regional diversity beyond national jurisdiction.
Professor Ramses Wessel, editor-in-chief of the International Organization Law Review, discussed the hot issues of many international societies in the following lectures on the theme of "International Organization Law", including: After the Brexit, the EU needs to re-examine its own status of the commerce and trade market in Europe and internationally; how the WTO dispute settlement (withdrawal, retaliation) mechanism effectively protects the interests of the plaintiff's member states, and also talks about Brim's series of procedures and requirements for book publishing, which fits well with the information needs of participants.
In the final, Professor Remco van Rhee, editor-in-chief of Legal History Review, introduced the journal, which featured Western legal traditions, including Roman law, church law, and common law. He later mentioned many practical techniques in the process of English academic paper writing, and the Chinese Civil Procedure Law was used as an example to remind everyone to pay attention to the differences in legal understanding brought about by different legal backgrounds.
On October 30th, the academic conference on "International Communication of China's International Law Theory" continued in Wuhan University School of Law. Following the arrangement on the 29th, there were also three editors on the 30th to introduce the hot issues in the journal on international human rights law, international trade and investment law. After the lecture, the Institute of International Law of Wuhan University (hereinafter referred to as the "International Law Institute") sent a representative of the teachers to introduce the hotspots and status quo of Chinese scholars in the field of international law, and put forward the problems facing them, and cleared the channels for long-term exchanges and cooperation.
The lecture on the morning of the 30th focused on the issue of international human rights law. Firstly, Simon Young, a well-known professor from the University of Hong Kong, gave a brief description of the status of human rights protection research in the Asia-Pacific region. He analyzed the difficulties faced by scholars in conducting research in this field, including the low approval rate of current human rights treaties and the academic research floating on literal surface and other issues; he also pointed out the future direction and potential development of the research. Many of the hot topics mentioned are important references for future research directions of participating scholars.
Next, Gudmundur Alfredsson, editor-in-chief of the International Journal on Minority and Group Rights, an international human rights law expert, introduced the general situation of ethnic minorities around the world and presented his own views on the current situations and problems of human rights protection for minorities and indigenous people. With vivid examples, he has explained how to feasibly and effectively protect the legitimate rights and interests of ethnic minorities within the framework of human rights law. The participating scholars actively asked questions and participated in the interaction with enthusiastic response.
The lecture on the afternoon of the 30th focused on international trade and investment. The presenter is Professor Stephen Schill, Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of World Investment and Trade. His remarks revolved around the current hot issues in the field of international trade and investment in the global environment, and commented on the development trends in this field: the development of regional organizations such as TTP, TTIP, SICA, the relevance of investment and trade, and interactions with international law in other areas; interactions with domestic law. There was a lively discussion at the scene, and the participating scholars raised questions and expressed their opinions, pushing the atmosphere of the whole lecture to a climax.
In order to promote the two-way communication between Brill Publishing House and International Law Institute, Expert Roundtable held the part of lecture. Professor Li Xueping from the International Public Law Teaching and Research Group, Associate Professor Liang Wenwen from the International Private Law Teaching and Research Group, and Professor Cui Xiaojing and Associate Professor Xiao Jun from the International Economic Law Teaching and Research Group introduced the major international law hot issues and current status of Chinese scholars to foreign scholars, and raised their own confusion in the research process. They expressed their hope to establish a long-term and effective cooperation mechanism with Brill Publishing House. to jointly promote the dissemination and development of China's international legal theory.
The meeting ended with a round of warm applause. This conference is not only an effective communication between the national high-end think tanks and internationally renowned publishing houses, but also important for promoting the spread of Chinese international law research in the world. It also provides important impetus for China's international law theory to go to the world.
