Course Title: Theory and Practice of the Law of the Sea (36 hours, 2 credits)
Lecturer: Zhang Haiwen
Teacher Profile: Zhang Haiwen, Doctor of Law. Director of the Institute of Marine Development Strategy of the State Oceanic Administration, vice president of the China Society of International Law, director and part-time professor of the National High-end Think Tank Wuhan University Institute of International Law, adjunct professor of the Defense College of China National Defense University, and part-time professor of Beijing Normal University.
Main research areas and academic achievements: international ocean law, ocean policy, and marine security strategy. Specifically related to the following aspects of research: (1) research on the issue of the law of the sea. The focus is on the study of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and other international conventions concerning the sea and their impact on our country; the international and maritime disputes surrounding our country. (2) Research on marine security strategy and policy issues. The focus is on tracking the world's maritime security situation, including the development of the oceans in the Arctic and the Arctic, especially in the Asia-Pacific region and China; studying the marine strategies and policies of the countries concerned. (3) Marine environmental protection and management issues. He has published more than ten monographs, such as "Diaoyu Islands", "South China Sea and South China Sea Islands", "The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea" Interpretation, "The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea" and so on. Besides, he has edited more than twenty works.
Requirements: This course is a mandatory course for first and second year graduate students of the International Law Institute. The doctoral students of the international law Institute may also elect this course. At the same time, the graduate students, doctoral students of other Institute are welcome to take this course.
