Dr. Yang Zewei of Wuhan University, at the invitation of Mr. Ascencio-Herrera Alfonso, Legal Counsel & Deputy to the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), successfully visited the ISA from June 12 to June 21, 2019.
The ISA, as an institution in the overall management of the exploration, development and utilization of international seabed resources, was established in 1994 and is headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica. The current focus of international seabed activities has shifted from the exploration phase to the exploration and development preparation period. Therefore, the development of a scientific, rational, fair and equitable the "Mining Code" is an important task for the ISA in recent years. As a member of the Council of the ISA and a contracting party for exploration, China has always attached great importance to the work of the ISA, and as a pioneer investor, the Chinese entity has acquired four exclusive exploration mines and exploration right for three resources in the international seabed area.
In recent years, Professor Yang has undertaken the research task of “Development of the ‘Mining Code’ in the International Seabed Area and China’s Due Position” entrusted by the relevant ministry of China. On the one hand, Professor Yang was further informed of the latest progress of the ISA's work on the development of the “"Mining Code” through the exchanges with relevant experts such as the Office of Legal Affairst of the ISA, and collected many important materials; on the other hand, Professor Yang also introduced the basic situation of the Institute of International Law of Wuhan University and the possibility of further cooperation between the two sides in the future. In addition, Professor Yang also conducted in-depth exchanges with the China’s representatives from the Permanent Mission of PRC to ISA.(It was reported by Xiaoyu Ai)
